Local knowledge proved the key to the Division Three National at the weekend with Littleport AC, fishing local waters on the Great Ouse claiming the team gold medal.
It was a tough day of competition with all 37 teams competing who fished at the highest standard with a head on battle between Littleport AC and B & T Match Pack from Essex to decide who would take home the gold medals.
On a day when only two points separated the top two positions, it was plain to see that the competition had been fierce and that the competition could be won or lost in an instant.
The home team of Littleport AC employed tactics of fishing for smaller fish to start with before moving onto fishing the feeder to bring in the bream. This approach was mirrored by B & T Match Pack going for the smaller roach and skimmers before moving on to catch the larger bream as well. However, there could only ever be one winner, with Littleport AC eventually coming out on top with a final points tally of 261 and final weight of 26.370kg.
Runners up B & T Match Pack had only two points less with 259 points and a final weigh in of 17.940kg.
In third place in the team classifications was Altrincham & District AC who finished with 254 points and a final combined weight of 24.910kg. In fourth place was East Midlands MG who were fishing their first national competition ending the day with 253 points, hot on the heels of Altrincham & District.
It was from East Midlands MG that the individual winner, Mick Burgess came from with a final weight of 14.980kg.
Mick, a lorry driver from Newark in Nottinghamshire fished from peg 35 in a productive K section to win the match. He started by fishing pinkie over ground bait before moving onto chopped worm and caster for the bigger bream with his biggest fish being a 2.500kg bream.
When asked about his success, Mick commented,
The key to my success was fishing a 1.5g lollypop, it helped me enormously when the wind picked up and was the main reason behind catching so many fish. I was lucky on the day as my techniques had a lot to do with the team and the practice they had put in, finding out the best techniques to use.
This was Micks second national as last year he had fished for Dynamite Mayfair and finished 3rd in his section. Mick added,
Winning as an individual is a once in a lifetime opportunity and it feels absolutely brilliant. However, I will be back on my local pond tonight with a few of the locals and enjoy some more relaxing fishing.
In second place individually was Paul Chambers, fishing for Harwich AC who ended with a full net of bream weighing 13.150kg. Paul was fishing peg 19 from what was a prolific section with 8 of the 10 highest placed anglers coming from K section.
Third place was Gold medallist in the team classification, Phillip Houghton from Littleport AC who ended with a weight of 12.450kg.
Everyone on the day commented on the excellent organisation at the match and that the Great Ouse was a terrific venue. A thank you must also go the EA who worked hard to clear the banks so that fishing could take place.

England Almost Complete the Italian Job
England Team announced
After three weeks of extensive trialling in which over 80 youngsters were viewed by England coaches Mark Downes, Steve Saunders and Joe Roberts, both the Sensas Team England U-16s and Drennan Team England U-21 teams have now been finalised.
The final trial took place at Furzton Lakes, Milton Keynes, and despite the hot calm conditions fishing was generally good.
Steve Saunders said afterwards
Each year picking a team gets more difficult as the standard continues to improve. The team we have selected to travel to the Czech Republic is an excellent one, and Im sure that will gain a good medal.
Mark Downes, Joint NFA Team Manager, commented
We are now seeing the benefits of the NFA entering the U-16 World Championships four years ago. We now have a steady progression of youngsters who are familiar with international match fishing techniques and are moving through the system. Four of my U-21 squad have already fished at U-16 level and Im sure will do extremely well on what, hopefully, will be a good fishing venue.
Dick Clegg, NFA International Events Director, commented;
I have total faith in the ability of the people running the event, and wish the teams well, and hope they come back with a medal.
The venue is the River Labe in the town of Pardubice, some 60 miles from Prague. This is a wide river approximately 3m deep and holding a good head of bream and bleak. Other species likely to be encountered are vimba and roach.
The match itself will be run on Saturday and Sunday, August 4th and 5th, with the previous five days allocated for practice.
The U-16 team, selected by Steve Saunders is:
- Connor Barlow Manchester
- Adam Byron Royston
- Matt Derry Walsall
- Matt Godfrey Sheffield
- Jake Marshall Surrey
- Rory Jones Gloucester
The U-21 team, selected by Mark Downes is as follows:
- Cameron Hughes Derby
- Callum Dicks Bristol
- Rick Hinds Wigan
- John Taylor Lincoln
- Eric Yeomans Swadlincote
- William Bohne Dorset
