With just one match left on the 3rd - 5th august to complete the Celtic Lakes qualifying heats, you'll have to be quick to book your place, but there are still places available on some of the other venues, so please check out www.walescarpmasters.co.uk for further information. MATCH REPORT - CELTIC LAKE HEAT 4 - New Welsh Record !!
However, in the four matches that have taken place so far, the venue has displayed a seemingly endless ability to produce such highly impressive form and is now catching the attention of many. On this latest occasion, the match got underway with the weather being far less than ideal and, with torrential rain and cold northerly winds the competitors could have easily been forgiven for thinking that catch-rates might suffer. However, even the appearance of a tornado (I kid you not!) that was far from the way it went over the weekend. Of course, the fish duly moved on the fresh new wind, but where some swims might have suffered a drop off in the level of catches, others were to prosper greatly. With the eventual winners quickly establishing a lead that they were never to lose, the other competitors battled away gainfully although realistically, there shouldn't have been any doubt in the final outcome. However, having said that, the nature of the fishing on Celtic lakes ensures that even seemingly massive leads can be lost in a very short time, because when the fish suddenly move in, a tremendous weight can be put together very quickly. On this occasion, unlike in the previous match where the lead was lost overnight on the final night, only the remaining places were there to be contended for. The fish kept coming steadily to the rods of Tim Rees and Simon O'Brian, and that was just what was needed to smash the ever-increasing match record. John Carney of Celtic Lakes resort was understandably delighted as his venue had raised the benchmark yet again. With the winning pair banking an impressive 609lb 15oz of carp, yet again the 40-hour Wales match record was broken. Finishing in third place, with an impressive enough catch of 270lb 12oz, were Jason Callaghan and Steve Blow, and in second place were Gary Wadey and Leigh Wells with 373lb 10oz. The final night was safely negotiated this time, with the eventual winners breezing home to clinch a well deserved and coveted place in the September final. For more information vsisit Celtic lakes excellent website at: www.celticlakesresort.com MATCH REPORT - GWERYD LAKE HEAT 3 The previous weekend to the match on Celtic lakes saw a qualifying heat take place on Gweryd Lakes where competitors arrived at lunch time on the start day, to have lunch in Hideaways Café and to meet the other competitors.
Sky Sports covered the first 24hours and made a quick assessment on where to set up the first shots. In the warm weather the carp move around the lake, especially in the evening and morning. They love the warm margins and can often be seen at the extreme ends of the lake rather than held up in the deeper, mid lake area. Within the first 2 hours seven fish were caught off the surface. The first action was three takes at once at 7.30pm, providing great excitement, and demanding flexible filming skills. This action continued on 'til dark but not much sleep was possible as Paul was out feeding again 3am and another seven fish were banked by the time the breakfasts they had ordered arrived! The winning pair, Paul Rowney and Darren Conway of Vision Baits International Team, bagged 25 fish weighing a total of 101kg (229lb 4oz). Second place fell to Mat Cudworth and Kyle Pierce with 7 fish for 30.75kg, and third were Paul and Mark Hussein 1 for 3.4kg.

During the early hours of Thursday morning (7 June) Enforcement Officers from Environment Agency Wales caught an individual retrieving an illegal net containing sea trout on the River Teifi at Newcastle Emlyn.
As a result of information received Environment Agency Wales Environmental Crime Officers had mounted a covert surveillance operation near the Rugby Club.
At around 5.30 am a man was seen retrieving three nets from the river. One of these contained six sea trout, weighing between four and eight pounds each. When the officers approached, the poacher attempted to run away but was caught, arrested by the officers and the police were called. When the police arrived the Agency officers obtained sufficient details from the poacher to allow them to de-arrest him, and report him for summons.A file is now being prepared for prosecution.
Dafydd Williams, Agency Enforcement Team Leader said:
"We take this type of offence very seriously. The protection of vulnerable fish stocks is one of the Agency’s key objectives. We will continue to make individuals who exploit our fisheries answerable for their crimes at every opportunity."
"The Teifi is currently not meeting its conservation target for migratory fish and we continue to be concerned that there are insufficient numbers of adult fish returning to the river to spawn. We are working with angling clubs, landowners and the Teifi Rivers Trust to improve the environment and fish stocks. Illegal fishing undermines these efforts by the community to improve their river."

This years ambitious plans to host a National Festival of Fishing have recieved an enormous boost, as the sports governing bodies have this week announced their support.
Over half a million people are expected to take part in the event this year which begins on the 21st July with National Fishing week and carries on right throughout the summer holidays with the ‘Take a friend fishing Campaign’.
Sean O’Driscoll, the chairman of the Angling Trades Association, (ATA), who are responsible for delivering this initiative on behalf of the industry, had this to say, ‘we are delighted with the news that the NFA, NFSA, S&TA and FACT are all committed to this years plans. The objective of this campaign is simply to introduce large numbers of non-anglers or lapsed anglers into our sport, irrespective of the discipline’.
It is clear to all parties that angling, like many other traditional sports, is suffering from a lack of newcomers. ‘There are so many alternative sports and pastimes available to all ages’ said Paul Bagaley, the chief executive of the National Federation of Anglers, (NFA), who went on to say, ‘participation campaigns such as National Fishing Week and Take a Friend Fishing are key to the health of the sport. Without encouraging newcomers or lapsed anglers to fish, the sport will decline and this will in turn, affect the environment. We at the NFA are extremely committed to such campaigns and our Clubs & Coaches are being encouraged to participate every step of the way’.
National Fishing Week for many years was recognised as a coarse fishing campaign, but since the ATA’s involvement it is becoming the participation event for the whole industry. David Rowe from the National Federation of Sea Anglers, NFSA, commented, ‘the NFSA had little to do with National Fishing Week until about 3 years ago. We had always created our own participation events; however being part of the whole media bandwagon that surrounds this National campaign definitely benefits our clubs, coaches and members enormously. We are very proud to be part of National Fishing Week and will also be encouraging as many of our members to take a friend fishing during August’.
Like everything in life these days, the Internet is making a big difference. The speed at which information can be relayed across all sectors of the industry is such a benefit, Paul Knight of the Salmon & Trout Association made this very valid point, ‘in previous decades it was often more difficult, cumbersome and expensive to activate effective campaigns with our own members, let alone members and fellow enthusiasts from the Coarse or Sea sectors. Now all we do is have a brief conversation, send an email, attachment and website link and within no time at all, we know what is happening, where when and how. We are able to communicate so much better and this is having a positive effect on the industry’.
Richard Wightman from the Environment Agency, whose department have pledged both monetary and grass root support for these initiatives is delighted with this news and said, ‘I am delighted to see so much cooperation and interaction between the sectors of angling. This will have a positive impact on the sport this summer and should introduce many newcomers to the environment of Great Britain.’

Fish ‘O’ Mania regular Phil Ringer booked his place in this year’s final with a triumphant win at Woodlands Lakes in North Yorkshire last weekend.
Once again the conditions proved pleasant for a day’s fishing with bright sunshine and warm temperatures albeit at the expense of the super weights coming out of the ponds. With five lakes being used on the day at Woodlands it was Curlew Lake which proved to be the most productive with both the first and second going to anglers from the lake.
The golden ticket fell to one of the Fish ‘O’ Mania aficionados and one of the most well known anglers in the country, Phil Ringer from Northamptonshire. Phil will be travelling to Doncaster with the aim of emulating his fellow Ringers Steve and Geoff who have both claimed titles in 1998 and 2000 respectively. It will be a tough battle in the final though with two former champions already having secured their places with Marc Jones and Steve Cooke recently qualifying.
However, Phil will be optimistic having already successfully outwitted two Fish ‘O’ Mania big guns including last year’s finalist and biggest fish winner Jon Arthur and regular Fish ‘O’ Mania angler Richard Hull. Phil who was fishing on peg 22, Curlew Lake won the match with 92lbs and 12ozs beating his nearest rival, Match Fishing journalist Jon Arthur by 9lbs. Phil who was fishing with meat at five metres caught carp, with his biggest fish being 10lbs.
When asked about his victory at Woodlands Lakes Phil stated,
“Though I spend a lot of the time travelling up and down the country to fish, I always enjoyed coming to Woodlands and today was no exception with the bonus of a final place – brilliant. To be honest it didn’t really go to plan as I had a very slow first few hours and it wasn’t until the last two that I started catching fish. Luckily for me they were mainly big with my final weight being made up of only nine fish. This will be my fourth time in the final, but I have never won it; hopefully it will be fourth time lucky!”
Second place fell to Jon Arthur who was only a fish behind Phil catching a final weight of 83lbs 12ozs. Jon who is a member of the Shakespeare Superteam was fishing from peg 11 opposite Phil and caught carp up to 9lbs.
Richard Hull finished in third place behind Jon and Phil with a final weight of 75lbs 12ozs. Richard from Warwickshire, who fishes for well known angling team Starlets, caught a combination of carp and tench with his biggest fish being 5lbs from Partridge Lake.
In fourth place was a police officer from Skegness, Stephen Hill who caught 71lbs 5ozs fishing from peg 12 on Skylark Lake. Finally, not to be outdone by his brother, Steve Ringer put in a good performance on the day to catch 64lbs from Kestrel Lake; however he won’t be happy until he books his ticket in the final next to Phil.

The NFA can now provide Access Audits for all angling clubs and fisheries with member clubs receiving a special discounted rate as a benefit of their membership of their Governing Body.
Access Audits are an essential provision for all fishery owners and angling clubs as both of these are regarded as ‘service providers’ under the Disability Discrimination Act and as such have a duty to comply and make their facilities available to all. An NFA Access Audit will show fisheries and clubs what is good about the access to their waters and facilities and where there is need for improvement.
Improvements in access are essential for all fisheries and angling clubs to show their commitment to taking a serious approach to the Disability Discrimination Act. With the right approach they will enable clubs to attract new members and provide better facilities for existing members. Showing a positive approach to access will also open the door to new funding streams as grant awarding bodies can be positively influenced by a commitment to access for all.
The overriding benefit that an NFA Access Audit will provide is that it will make angling available to everyone and more participants in the sport is what everybody in angling wants to see. In 2006 the NFA commissioned an Access Audit of Marsh Farm Lakes belonging to Godalming Angling Society, prior to them being used as the venue for the 2006 NFA National Final for Anglers with Disabilities.
Andrew Mackenzie, Still Water Fisheries Manager for Godalming AS, stated upon the results of his NFA Access Audit,
“I've just received a copy of your Access Report and I think it is probably the most honest and balanced report I have read in a long time. ‘Thank you’ doesn't really seem enough but I and the rest of the committee are really very grateful for your time, effort and honesty."
This is not the only benefit that clubs can receive from their membership with water owning clubs also receiving free legal and fishery advice and heavily discounted insurance rates allowing them to save considerable club funds.
If you would like to find out more about how your club or fishery can benefit from an NFA Access Audit, or want information about any of the benefits of joining the NFA please visit the website, www.nfadirect.com or call the NFA directly on 0115 981 3535.

June 4th 2007 - Latest news from the Wales Carp Masters
MATCH REPORT - GWERYD LAKES HEAT 2
Gweryd Lakes Match a tight affair. 12th-14th May
The contestants, who were treated to lunch in the Hideaways cafe before the competition, enjoyed a very closely-run match that went right to the wire.
The weather had brightened up and it started dry but then rained torrentially throughout the night, which could perhaps explain why no fish were caught on thesecond night. Changing winds and temperatures persisted and Gweryd's bigger carp proved shy all weekend.
MATCH REPORT - CELTIC LAKES HEAT 2
It just keeps getting better and better at Celtic Lakes!
More astounding news has reached us from Celtic Lakes. The match held over the weekend of 18th-20th May has produced some incredible weights.
Complex owner, John Carney, phoned us to say: "What a weekend! We are all totally knackered, was that some serious fishing or what!"
In first place were Philip Mathews and Terry Hughes with an incredible 511lb 14oz, but story of the weekend was that they had to stage a late fight back, from over 80lb behind, to upstage Simon O'Brian and Mike Netherway who were in front for much of the match. Simon and Mike concluded with a total of 473lb as their catch rate fell away dramatically overnight on the run in.
COMPETITION DETAILS
Entry is eligible for anglers aged 14 yrs. and over, fishing in pairs.
There is still time to enter the qualifiers at any of the five venues, Peterstone Lakes, White Springs, Gwerydd lakes, Llanygors and Celtic Lakes Resort. Wales Carp Masters finals will be held at Celtic Lakes on the 28th/29th and 30th September with the winners taking a £10,001.00 cash prize.

Wales carp Masters Gets Underway
Despite a pretty grim week weather wise, the carp fishing at Bury Hill remained exceptionally good with a further 3 thirties reported again this week, one from the Old Lake and two from Temple Lake together with plenty of twenties.
Grabbing a quick night on Temple yesterday, Duncan Ansell was the lucky angler to bag a brace of thirties. Fishing peg 6, Duncan fished an 18mm Mainline Fusion boilie to the island margins to catch a 30lb 1oz Linear which is a new thirty and a 30lb 10oz Ghost, which incidentally is the second Ghost to top thirty pounds.
Keith Twine (pictured) was the other lucky angler to catch a thirty and a new PB, this time a pretty mirror weighing 31lb 8oz from the Old Lake. With a lot of big fish coming from the top lily bay, Keith decided to fish one of the spillway swims fishing a homemade boilie to the open water behind the lilies.

Windermere, Ambleside and District Angling Association (WADAA) has become the fifth angling club to receive the coveted Sport England Clubmark. At a recent event Sir John Harman, the Chairman of the Environment Agency, was on hand to present Neil Birkinshaw, WADAA, with their certificate. NFA’s representative Frank Lythgoe was also there to congratulate them on this latest achievement.
The club which was founded in 1955 and now has 1,000 members has seen rapid growth recently as a result of ambitious management and continuing improvement to its fisheries. Much of the impetus for improvement has resulted from the work the club has undertaken to achieve the Sport England Clubmark Award.
The scheme is administered by Sport England and implemented through the National Federation of Anglers and supported by the Environment Agency. WADAA is now one of only five angling clubs in the country to have reached the required standards set for club management, coaching and the provision of safe and structured opportunities for youngsters to become involved in the sport.
As Neil Birkinshaw manager of WADAA states,
“Working towards Clubmark provided the initiative for WADAA to launch its South Cumbria Kingfishers project which is already attracting new junior members to fishing from all over the region. Prior to Clubmark being implemented in the club and the launch of South Cumbria Kingfishers we had just 18 junior members, however numbers have now risen to 96 youngsters and rising.
Our aim is simply to provide absolutely first class fishing for our members and visitors alike. Over the last couple of years we have adopted a much more progressive and forward thinking approach to running the club, it’s very encouraging to see that the benefits in terms of increased membership and better fishing are now beginning to feed through.”
The ADB’s Club Development Officer, Julian Taylor believes that,
“Clubmark is an essential part of any Angling clubs desire to establish itself as a safe and successful club within the community. Windemere, Ambleside and District A.A has achieved Clubmark status and done exceptionally well, showing a high degree of dedication to gain their accreditation and deserve the success Clubmark will ultimately bring them. This club used Clubmark to drive the development of their club forward. They have recently doubled their coaching workforce and as a result are now able to run a structured coaching programme throughout the whole of this summer. This has already helped them attract new junior members to their club.”
In order to become a Clubmark club you need to visit the NFA’s website, www.nfadirect.com which has a comprehensive breakdown on what’s involved and complete the online enquiry form which will go straight through to our Clubmark representative who will help you on the road to your accreditation.
