COARSE & GAME FISHING NEWS - MAY 2007:

May 21st 2007 - Cooke Serves up Victory at Heronbrook !

Past Fish ‘0’ Mania champion Steve Cooke from Nottinghamshire served up a real treat with a convincing win at the Heronbrook qualifier last weekend with a winning margin of almost 41kgs over his nearest rival.

All the talk at the draw was of Island Lake being highly fancied by many of the competitors. However, the weather during the week and on the day conspired to put a damper on these hopes leaving the match wide open.

It was Steve Cooke, a 49 year old in the engineering trade from Retford in Nottinghamshire who raced to victory fishing from peg 6 on Match Lake to catch 68.28kgs of fish. The winner decided that his main line of attack would be the method feeder fished tight to the island 25metres away. Casting to within 6 to 12 inches of the island bank, and using Ringers Green groundbait, Steve alternated between Solar 6mm Red and Yellow Boilies as he raced ahead of the competition and never looked back. Steve had the fish biting immediately and secured his first carp after only 10 minutes. Following his first fish he caught consistently for the remainder of the match netting 3 to 4 fish in his subsequent casts. Although Steve did have one short spell without catching, it was only a temporary break before the swim burst back into life again.

All this success led to a field-shattering weight of 68.28kgs of carp with his biggest being a good 12lb to book his ticket to Doncaster in July. Speaking to Steve during the match, NFA match organiser Bob Dyer commented on how calm and relaxed he looked, to which Steve responded,
“When you have confidence in what you’re doing and you feel it could be your day, then there is no need to be anything other than relaxed, it makes the fishing easier”.

It is clear from the results why Steve was so relaxed as his nearest rival was almost 41kgs behind him as Andy Moors claimed second place with a weight of 27.92kgs. Following the match Steve stated,
“I have fished so many of these qualifiers before I knew that I must attack properly to win. I didn’t expect to win it like I did but the fish started biting early and I just kept my nose in front”.

This is Steve’s fifth visit to the Fish ‘O’ Mania final as Steve commented,
“I have been there before, so I have experience and am as confident as you can be with these matches. It all depends on the draw but like at Heronbrook you have to go out and attack to win, there is no second place with this competition”.

With Andy Moors finishing in second place, third place on the day went to the runner up from Browning Cudmore, Keiron Rich. Keiron will add Heronbrook to his list of near misses where he fished similar tactics to the winner but was unable to produce the same prolific weights catching 27.14kgs on peg 46, Match Lake. In fourth place was Edward Warren, fishing his first ever Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier catching Carp to 9lbs and weighing in 26.88kgs. Fifth place went to Andy May who drew Island peg 15, and using the Method Feeder with Hair Rigged Pellet, weighed in with 25.50kgs.

Winner Steve is pictured with the NFA’s new, ‘I’m a Fish O Maniac’ t-shirt which is available for only £9.99 by calling the NFA directly on 0115 981 3535.

May 20th 2007 - Another 4 thirties hit the bank at Bury Hill Fisheries

Despite some pretty grim weather early week, Temple produced yet another 3 thirties this week, a 34lb 8oz common to regular Ray Harding which is his second Temple thirty this year, a 34lb mirror to Temple new boy David Wood who was fishing his first day session on Temple and a 33lb 8oz common to regular Stuart Mountjoy. In turn, the Old Lake also threw up a pretty 32lb 8oz common as part of a 16 fish catch to angler Gerry Holmes.

Fishing peg 7 on Temple, Ray Harding fished an Activate boilie to the island margins catching his mint condition common tight to the margins, Ray also caught a 21lb mirror during his short midweek session. Whilst a lot of the action has come from the mid to deep water sections in recent weeks, David Wood chose to fish peg 3 for his day session, baiting with Icelandic Red baits and fishing a single 18mm bottom bait to the island channel, David caught his new PB just as he was packing up. The third thirty of the week fell to regular Stuart Mountjoy who bagged four fish over 25lb when he fished peg 10 Thursday night which included a 33lb 8oz common. Fishing 14mm KG1 pop ups over 5kg of hemp which Stuart had placed close to the island, Stuart also caught two further commons weighing 27lb 10oz and 25lb as well as a 29lb 14oz mirror.

Whilst Temple has seen the bulk of the thirties caught in recent weeks, the Old Lake came back on form this week producing some huge multi bags which included a big fish haul for Gerry Holmes who was the lucky angler to bag both a pretty 32lb 8oz common and a new PB to boot. As part of a very busy 16 fish catch, Gerry fished peg 16 along the front bank catching his big common, a 21lb common and 20lb mirror along with 13 other carp averaging 18lb from the point of the island. Gerry used Quest Rahja Spice boileis over hemp to catch catch all his fish.

May 16th 2007 - Wales Carp Masters Gets Underway.

Wales Carp MastersThe inaugural Match of the Wales Carp Masters took place a couple of weeks back on Friday 13th April. Fittingly, the first heat of this exciting new competition, with a stunning prize fund of £20,001.00 got underway on the brand new Celtic Lakes Resort complex near Lampeter, Mid Wales. One of the competitors, Mark Cresswell, who partnered Jeff Lemaistre and represented Team Carp Addict forum in the match said:
"The owner, John Carney, has huge plans for this brand new 7 lake complex. The specimen lake being 17 acres, feels a lot smaller due to the feature islands, and the scenery is nothing short of stunning with fantastic views across the surrounding countryside. We had Red Kites hovering above us nearly all weekend. John and his team were fantastic, as soon as a fish was caught it was a quick phone call and they were round for the weighing. Nothing was too much trouble for them"

The Wales Carp Masters final is to be held on the 28/29/30th September at Celtic Lakes Resort. The first coveted place in the final went to Lee Botchett & James Willatts who stormed home as the worthy winners with an incredible 324lb 8oz. Well done guys.

The Wales Carp Masters is sponsored by Visit Wales, Regional Tourism Partnerships and The Environment Agency.

There is still time to enter the qualifiers at any of the five venues, Peterstone Lakes, White Springs, Gwerydd lakes, Llanygors and Celtic Lakes Resort.

MATCH REPORT - CELTIC LAKES HEAT 1
WCM off to a fine start at Celtic Lakes Match One By Lee Botchett:

Celtic Lakes winner heat 1Well what can I say? I am still buzzing about it all!

We started the Friday with maggots on one rod and got blitzed by the bream for half an hour so we dropped that. We then put a spod mix to the island with two rods on it and one rod off the island with glow in the dark corn...I had two takes that night off the spodded area which I lost. Our first fish was at 5.30 am on the Saturday morning - not sure of the size though, although I know we were the last pair to catch a fish and were a little down as the guys to our left were about 85lb in front and in first place.

MATCH REPORT - CELTIC LAKES HEAT 2
A new record for Wales!

The Wales Carp Masters event held at Celtic Lakes Resort on May 5th-6th produced a stunning new record for total weight of fish caught during a 40 hour match. A fantastic 1,418lbs of carp were banked by the competitors, with the winning pair, Craig Jones and Karl Jones, running out with a tremendous haul of 354lb 9oz. The second placed pair, Karl Hopkins and Arun Keightley, fought hard all the way and run the eventual winners extremely close bagging a fine haul of 333lb 15oz of carp for their efforts.

Congratulations to Craig and Karl, and also to John Carney of Celtic Lakes for setting the standards in cracking the record. Top news!

MATCH REPORT - GWERYD LAKES
A last gasp entry paid dividends as Jamie Price and Nathan Blythyn team up.

Winners and runners up at Llyn Gweryd LakesJamie, who works in Kerbside Recycling for Flintshire Council, has been a regular angler at Gweryd Lakes for the last two years. He was only paired at the last minute with Nathan Blythyn, who works for Lionel's tackle in Buckley, after alot of effort. Jamie, over Easter, had an amazing haul of 27 carp from Gweryd in just 24hours - admittedly with a bait boat -and was determined to try to resolve the problem of finding someone to fish with him.

MATCH REPORT - PETERSTONE LAKE
Peterstone Pair take the honours

Paul Jones showing off his winning ticket The first Peterstone heat of the Wales Carp Masters was held from Friday 27th April through to Sunday 29th, with many competitors turning up for the pre-match BBQ held the previous evening. The BBQ, which was laid on courtesy of the Peterstone Lakes, was a roaring success with all who attended and set the scene for the weekend with a good atmosphere being generated.

The peg draw on the following morning was conducted very efficiently and soon the competitors were off to their pegs, with Paul Jones smiling contently. Paul and his partner, Anthony Budd had been extremely lucky in the peg draw, with Paul lucky-dipping a peg that he frequently fishes from on his regular stomping ground.

COMPETITION DETAILS

Entry is eligible for anglers aged 14 yrs. and over, fishing in pairs. There is still time to enter the qualifiers at any of the five venues, Peterstone Lakes, White Springs, Gwerydd lakes, Llanygors and Celtic Lakes Resort.

Wales Carp Masters finals will be held at Celtic Lakes on the 28th/29th and 30th September with the winners taking a £10,001.00 cash prize.

May 11th 2007 - England Team Announced

After three highly successful years where Drennan Team England has won silver and two gold medals in the World Championships Joint NFA Team Manager Mark Downes and Mark Addy have decided to stick with the same six man squad for this year’s World Championships on Lake Valence in Hungary.

The match length is already well known to this squad of six who secured the European Championship title three years ago on the same venue. The water will be full of skimmers up to 300 grams and Carp to 1 ½ kilos. Mark Downes stated, “This is a really strong squad, feared by every nation in the world at the moment. What’s more the anglers in the squad are all in tip top form and gunning for that 3rd gold medal.” The team will be Will Raison, Alan Scotthorne, Stuart Conroy, Sean Ashby, Des Shipp and Steve Gardner.

The European Championships in Modena Italy, along the Cavo Lama Canal, see England’s six man squad looking to improve on last year’s Bronze medal finish. The squad will consist of; Alan Scotthorne, Steve Gardner, Will Raison, Stuart Conroy, Steve Hemingray and Darren Cox.

The recent ruling means that the same 6 anglers cannot represent a Nation in both events there must be at least 2 changes. Mark Addy stated,
"This new format gives us opportunity to try new anglers, but we have decided to stick with the same 6 men as last year to help develop their experience. I’m sure the venue will suit them all and we will be disappointed if we don’t come back with a major medal."

The team has not been selected for the six Nations/Home Internationals as a venue has not been decided however Mark Downes states,
"I hope this event continues to be run as I’m convinced the success we are having at present is benefited by this event. It gives us the opportunity to blood new anglers as well as ensuring regulars gain more international fishing under their belts."

May 10th 2007 - Aquatic insects and climate change make BBC News !

Salmon and trout associationThe BBC recently covered Cardiff University Prof Steve Ormerod and Isabelle Durance’s research on the effects of climate change on stream insects as published in Global Change Biology.

Link to news story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/6619379.stm

Anything you could do to disseminate interest in the BBC news item would help raise its profile (which is why we are publishing this article here ... ed). Insects are the backbone of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Changes to insect populations and their health is important news.

What else can you do to help riverflies?

  • Find out more in the S&TA Spring Gamefisher magazine (see attached) Prof Steve Ormerod offers hope and concern when he asks, Can we climate-proof our rivers?
  • Observe aquatic invertebrates hatching, and report your results using the S&TA National 2007 River Fly Abundance Study survey form http://www.salmon-trout.org/issues_fly_life.asp#Survey The results shows trends in populations. The most recent Abundance Study report on the decline of Iron Blue has resulted in its inclusion in the current list of (candidate) Biodiversity Action Plan species. Anglers ignited the concern for aquatic invertebrates after their combined observations showed the dramatic decline in aquatic riverflies. This spurred the Riverfly Partnership coordinated action for Riverflies.
  • Join the work of the Riverfly Partnership, chaired by S&TA, on www.riverflies.org. After June 1st, the presentations from the March 2007 2nd Riverfly conference, How Good is Your River, will be up on the website. These presentations have more specific suggestions on what to do to help riverflies. The conference launched the Angling Monitoring Initiative for riverfly nymphs. And, new aquatic insect identification guides have just been created and published with the angler in mind.
  • Participate in a 2007 certified Riverfly Workshops for groups of anglers wanting to monitor riverfly nymphs in rivers in order to detect pollution incidents that would otherwise be missed. Or, organise and register your interest for a 2008 certified Riverfly Workshop. This monitoring is an excellent way to discover and have the evidence necessary to press for the resolution of pollution problems on your river. The Angler Monitoring Initiative is fully supported by the Environment Agency and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency right from the Chief Executive to the staff working on the waterside. More information in Riverfly Partnership member publications. Also, this month angling magazines support and explain the launch of the Angler Monitoring Initiative.

May 10th 2007 - Bream and Tench fizz at Bury Hill Fisheries !

The bream and tench fishing is really hotting up now with 200lb bags being taken off the bank and a reported 300lb boat haul. Whilst the big bags are being dominated by the bream which have been caught to over 8lb, quite a few tench are also showing with specimens to 7lb+ being reported. With both the front and long banks producing some very good weights, the middle to end sections of both banks are the key areas with both pole and float tactics proving best, although small feeder tactics are also catching.

One angler to catch a big bag this week was Michael Head. Fishing peg 3, Michael fished a 13m pole using soft pellet over a little groundbait to catch 60 bream and 4 tench for a good 200lb plus bag. Colin Rae also had a good day when he fished the mid thirties. Fishing a loaded waggler 5 rod out into 5’ water, Colin bagged bream to 5lb along with 8 tench to 6lb 1oz and a good number of skimmers and roach for well over 150lb.

Boat anglers are also finding some incredible sport with a 300lb bag reported early week. Whilst all areas of the jungle are producing fish, the far reed bed is alive with carp and tench right now with boats catching a lot of fish on soft pellet and paste fished over pellet. The tench are really steaming into the jungle right now so expect some big bags.

Regular John Miles had a cracking day down the jungle catching 24 tench to 6lb 1oz, a few bream and 4 carp to 18lb 7oz for close to 200lb. John fished 10mm soft pellet over a bed of 3mm pellet.

May 10th 2007 - Become an Angling Coach !

The NFA has now confirmed dates for 18 Level One Coaching courses from June 2007 onwards. Courses are available all over the country with further details and how to apply available from the NFA website, www.nfadirect.com.

This is part of the anglings expansion of the new Level One Coaching courses in a drive to get more people involved in the development of angling and introduce more newcomers to the sport.

Becoming a coach is a great way of giving something back to the sport and helping to attract new participants. Through coaching you can support angling in a variety of ways including, working within angling clubs, delivering angling education in partnership with schools and after school clubs as well as helping with angling events around the country.

Coaching is at the very heart of angling, from the first time you pick up a rod at the local school or club to the World Championship squads competing for medals at the highest level. Tommy Pickering the Manager of the Ladies World Championship team is a fully licensed NFA coach and is a strong believer in the value of coaching.

“Coaching is a great way of putting something back into the sport. The reason I became a coach is because I really just wanted to help other people get interested in angling and to help them catch more fish. One of the most enjoyable aspects of being a coach is when you have the ability to pass on your knowledge and experience, and most importantly put a smile on someone’s face when they pick up a rod and catch a fish for the first time.”

If you would like to follow in the footsteps of Tom Pickering and get on the coaching ladder please visit the website now, completing the application form and returning it to: NFA Coaching Department, The National Federation of Anglers, National Water Sports Centre, Adbolton Lane, Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, NG12 2LU.
