June 2013 :: Here is the latest fishing report for Nineoaks Angling Centre near Aberaeron, Ceredigion in West-Wales.

Nineoaks Fishery Report Coarse Fishing: 24th June
Mr Gareth Thompson of Pencoyd, Bridgend float fishing on two maggots in the Main Lake topped his mixed bag of Roach and Carp off with a fine specimen 2lb Roach. His reason for fishing here was because of the quality Roach that can be regularly caught. His best Carp during the past couple of days was one of 8lb. Other anglers besides Carp were catching plenty of Roach, Tench, an occasional Chub and a few Barbel. Surface fishing as usual has been excellent, as has the margin fishing. Most baits have been doing well, with many being encouraged to try fresh or frozen mussel, and being surprised at how good a bait it is, including Ron Cousins of the Angler's Mail!

Coarse Fishing: 20th June
Carp and coarse fishing is now in full swing with plenty of good fish coming out. Afternoons and early mornings best with floating baits such as bread, dog biscuit or extra-thick toast! Whole cooked muscle (fresh or frozen but not in jars of preservative) great for the carp; pieces muscle good for the Roach. Quite a few of our small Barbel regularly coming out. The Chub are caught less frequently. Good Bream and Tench from the House and main pools. Mark, our local Grass Carp specialist can selectively pick his fish, he's pictured above with a late evening caught 11 3/4lb grassie on dog biscuit.

Trout Fishing: 20th June
Early mornings or the last hour of the day best for some really hard fighting Rainbows and Blues.
Coarse Fishing: 14th June, The Carp have just finished spawning, and so in a day or two, once their hormones have subsided, they will be ravenous. Meanwhile, there have been plenty of Carp, Roach, Tench, Bream, Grass Carp, Chub and small Barbel coming out on all sorts of baits. As usual sweetcorn, bread, maggots and luncheon meat all doing well and catching plenty. Fresh or frozen mussels, hooked through the gristle patch, and fished close in are doing really well. Don't over complicate your rigs - just keep things simple and on a light rod for the best fishing.

Peter Chisholm caught a large grassie from the House Pool (pictured above). Local lass, Los Fallon has again upped her pb to a credible 16lb 2oz, with a spawn bound Common Carp (pictured above at 14lb) when she caught the same fish before it had put weight on for spawning. Caught on dog biscuit. Mr John Yeonmans, from Llandudno, with a lovely Mirror from the House Pool.

Trout Fishing: 14th June
Daddies, suspended buzzers, Montanas, Diawl Bach nearly all fly types doing well. On the hot days with clear blue skies fishing has been hard, overcast days with light breezes have been best. No outstanding fish or catches, just good regular Trout Fishing with the average Rainbow or Blue being caught at 2.25lb each with some much bigger.

Following the recent success of Team England Angling’s under 18s and under 23s teams in France, England are now undisputed World Match fishing champions. FIPSed, the world governing body for angling, last week issued new world rankings, based on competition results from the past 5 years, and England is number 1 in six of the ten categories and in the top three in three others.

Angling Trust angling newsMark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust said: “This fantastic achievement by the teams is a credit to all the Team England anglers and to the many volunteers who support and manage them.  We are immensely grateful to all the sponsors who support individual teams and we hope that this runaway success will attract additional financial support from companies who want to be associated with a winning team.  The Angling Trust has a new Talent Pathway programme to develop talented anglers which is already generating new Team England squad members whose job it will be to try and maintain this standard in the future.”

Dick Clegg OBE, International Events Manager said: “to achieve this standard across the board at an international level is proof that our team management systems are the best in the world and I congratulate every angler who has contributed to this success.

We are now seeded number one in six of the ten FIPSed coarse fishing disciplines that we compete in, and it's time that we receive some government funding. I can't think of any other sport that is as successful as we are and yet we don't get the recognition that our achievements deserve."

It should be noted that a number of the teams have attained this unprecedented achievement without any form of sponsorship support whatsoever.

The success has been achieved by the teams own commitment in supporting each other through fundraising activities as well as their own significant contributions out of their own pockets.

If you are interested in becoming one of our invaluable team sponsors please get in touch with the Angling Trust via their website.

The new FIPSed Rankings:

  • Nations - No.1 (sponsored by Drennan)
  • Under 23 - No.1 (sponsored by Drennan)
  • Under 18 - No.1 (sponsored by Sensas)
  • Euros - No.1 (sponsored by Drennan)
  • Clubs - No.1
  • Veterans - No.1
  • Ladies - No.2
  • Carp - No.3 (sponsored by Korda)
  • Feeder - No.3 (After 2 years competing in this competition, sponsored by Preston Innovations)
  • Disabled - no ranking (unable to fish every year due to lack of funding.)

The Angling Trust has secured an important breakthrough in the war against poachers and fish thieves.

Angling Trust angling newsNow all 132,000 police officers in England and Wales will have web access to fisheries enforcement guidance and the law on POLKA - the national Police On-Line Knowledge Area.

Officers in the 43 forces in England and Wales routinely refer to POLKA when they encounter incidents and offences beyond routine beat policing.

POLKA will now include the Angling Trust produced Elementary Guide to Angling Law and Fishery Enforcement which has been endorsed by the police National Wildlife Crime Unit.

It explains to police how fishery enforcement works and details how both poaching, which carries a maximum fine of £5,000, and fish theft from enclosed waters are mattersfor the police.

While anglers have become increasingly angry about both problems, police have lacked guidance on the action they can and should take.

This Angling Trust guide to the law will also be used by wildlife crime officers to brief colleagues in individual forces.

The Trust's Fishery Enforcement Manager, Dilip Sarkar, himself a former police officer, said:
"This is a really important step forward in educating the police. It will be of special interest to anglers in the South East where the Trust and the Environment Agency are piloting the Voluntary Bailiff Scheme to put more trained eyes and ears on the banks.

The Trust urges water keepers and individual anglers to report incidents to local police but also phone the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60 to keep them in the picture."

The Angling Trust together with the Environment Agency has also produced an 'impact statement' on poaching and fish theft - explaining why the offences are serious. It will be used as guidance by the police National Wildlife Crime Unit and by the courts in determining sentences.

Is fishing dead in the water?

John Bailey, author and presenter of the book and the TV series ‘Fishing in the Footsteps of Mr. Crabtree’ appeared on BBC1 Sunday 14th July to talk about the decline in youngsters getting involved in the sport of fishing. It’s a subject that’s close to our hearts as the search continues for young anglers to appear in Series 2 of ‘Fishing in the Footsteps of Mr. Crabtree’.

So what’s the problem? Is fishing no longer the #1 participatory sport in the Uk? Is it more that people aren’t buying licenses? Is it all part of a (not so) slow decline into a stagnant lifestyle that revolves around tech and instant gratification?

As Team Crabtree we’ve straddled the mainstream and the fishing industry, and been privy to the assumptions that people make about angling and anglers. Here’s some of our thoughts on the subject, but what do you think?

1. Angling is still #1
The EA stats may reveal that the numbers of teenagers coming in to the sport are down,  but angling is still the Number 1 participation sport in the UK – and the world!

2. Barriers to Access
There are undoubtedly more barriers to entry these days. More private waters than ever before,  health and safety concerns,  worries about children going out alone. And then there’s all the tech barriers – the XBox generation and a general lack of physical activity amongst the young. In our opinion though, the biggest barrier to entry is lack of opportunity - there was a time that fishing was something that all children has tried and then made the decision about whether to stick with. That's certainly not the case now.

3. Lack of support from the mainstream media
Angling has a widespread and varied appeal across its disciplines,  and millions of participants at grass roots level. However,  it is rarely supported by mainstream media unless it’s a sensationalist type of show that doesn’t represent day to day fishing and isn’t accessible or attainable. Great angling shows appear often on the likes of Sky Sports and Discovery but these reach dedicated audiences and not potential new people or those with a passing interest that could be channelled into action.

4. Anglers are ‘cool’ – you just don’t necessarily hear about them!
Many people in the public eye use fishing as their escapism – they don’t shout from the rooftops about it – It’s their way of getting away from the limelight. There are so many famous actors,  rock and pop stars,  personalities and sports people that go fishing. Fishing is not necessarily perceived as ‘cool’ because it’s not really a ‘look at me’ sport. And harking back to point #3 – because it’s not always supported by the mainstream media  people have a stereotyped view of what anglers are. If you saw the kids that apply to be our young protégés in the shows and our Peters that appear – you will see some really cool kids from a real cross section of the UK.

5. Angling offers something for everybody
If the positives – of which there are many – were to be illustrated on terrestrial TV channels there would be a massive shift in popularity and of people going and giving it a try. It’s a great and inclusive pastime,  it’s a great way to meet nature,  to share with parents,  family and friends,  it’s active,  it gets you outdoors and you get to see and experience so much that you can’t sitting at home glued to a games console. One of the best aspects of angling is that it can be enjoyed equally at 6 or 86 – and it is!  Through Crabtree we’ve clearly seen and enjoyed the meeting of generations,  sharing in a common passion – the transference of skills,  knowledge and experience. Angling provides the ideal platform to create communities,  injecting mutual respect and providing all involved with the opportunity to set themselves personal goals and targets that they can celebrate with friends and family.

For us and other agencies that we work with – and there are so many great people out there doing amazing things to help and support getting youngsters into the sport – the key is about introducing beginners of all ages,  class and gender to the sport – but especially youngsters and teenagers.

Environmental Education Centre

Virunga is home to the critically endangered mountain gorilla, along with other rare and endangered wildlife. There is currently little environmental education within the vast 8,500 km2 Virunga National Park. However, at Park HQ, Rumangabo, a small building is now destined to be the future Environmental Education Centre for the Park. Funds raised at the auction will pay the salary of a teacher, their training and for basic, interactive displays and materials for children to use at the Centre.

As part of a new environmental education programme being rolled out around Virunga, G4G delivered a pedal powered cinema to the Park in March 2012, generously funded by Animal Friends Insurance. Children at remote schools with no electricity, now have the chance to watch conservation films powered simply by a cyclist. The new Environmental Education Centre will soon give children the chance to explore the Park with a ranger, see the gorilla orphans at the Senkwekwe Centre and learn all about Virunga’s fabulous wildlife.

Fishing In Cardiff

Freshwater Fishing in Cardiff

If you are thinking of fishing in Cardiff then the one thing you will certainly have is variety.

Cardiff is situated on the Bristol Channel where 3 significant rivers terminate. Two of these flow into Cardiff Bay. This bay is fast becoming a secret treasure chest for fishermen and can only get better.

River fishing in Cardiff

The Taff flows through the center of Cardiff and its lower sections around Hamadryad Park contain some nice chub at about 6lbs and significantly Barbel can now be found here. The lower Taff around Hamadryad Park has produced chub to 6lbs and a few Barbel have started to appear. At the beginning of he year some superb Grayling were landed.

The other river that flows into the Bay, the Ely has some surprises, the lower reaches will provide some very healthy pike, earlier in the year, 11 pike have been caught the largest being 15lb. With plenty of prey in Cardiff Bay pike can do their own fishing in Cardiff and their numbers and size can only grow.

Fishing in Cardiff Bay

So what of Cardiff Bay, well when the bay was formed by the construction of a barrage a tidal mudflat became a huge freshwater lake. The bay took a while to balance itself out but over the past few years it has now started producing. What we now see when fishing in Cardiff bay is a really diverse fishing arena.

Rudd of superb quality have been caught up to two pounds and carp in double figure poundage are readily available and there is a record of 30lb being gently landed from the bay waters. 10,000 bream were added to the bay earlier in 2013 and current catches are around 2lb. Walking over the pontoons at the sailing clubs some big mullet can be seen in the shallows and with such an abundance of different fish it is not surprising to learn that a recent pike weighed in at 33lbs.

No fisherman like to be told what to do as we all have our secrets, but take care to check your gear as these are lively healthy fish that put up serious resistance !!

A map of permitted areas for fishing in Cardiff is shown here.

Carp Fishing in Cardiff

There are carp ponds dotted all over south wales, however, the warmer coastal climate inevitably means that they weigh a bit more making fishing in Cardiff a bit more exciting. We have already identified one area for Carp, that being Cardiff bay and if the surrounding area is considered they area also available at Pyscodlyn Mawr. There are also carp in Barry pods as described below and In the body of the city of Cardiff there are carp to be found in Roath Park Lake. Daily fishing in Cardiff permits are £4.60 and can be bought from the kiosk offering boat and pedalo hire.

There are two dedicated carp lakes to be found in Cardiff both producing excellent fish

Cefn Mably Lakes
6 mixed coarse fishing lakes and two carp fishing lakes. 8 lakes to choose from can’t be bad! One of the nice things about Cefn Mably is that it caters for beginners and families as well as serious expert anglers. Prime specimen mirror carp from Lodge Lake , and Spring Pond up to 28lbs would make any fishermans day!

Lodge Lake:-Day Ticket £11.00 Spring Pond:- Day Ticket £9.00

Lamby Lakes
Lamby lake is to be found on Lamby way and terrific larger carp fishing in Cardiff is to be found there. The fish are generally over 20lb and 30lb’ers are in there as well. The lake staff are really friendly and well informed.
Other fish inhabiting the same waters are perch, tench and golden rudd, and we all know what an attractive fish they are.

Fishing in Cardiff surrounding area

The surrounding area also provides some good opportunities, a short drive away on the river Trothy in Monmouthshire good catches of Dace and small Chub have been caught.

Not so far away is a small pond location called Pyscodlyn Mawr its tucked away a bit but offers Carp, Tench, Barbel, Pike, Chub, it suffered a bit with trees falling into it in the spring of 2013 but these have been removed and it is now back to its best.
GPS Coordinates 51.475704,-3.382237 Marked as B on the map.

Barry ponds
To be found in Cadoxton near Barry town. These ponds are on land owned by Dow corning. Both the ponds have Bream, Tench, Roach and Rudd. In addition in Carol's Pond there is an additional selection of Crucian Carp, small Common and mirror carp.

Sue's Lake
This lake has Pike and Eels to add variety and is an extension of an old pond so had an old stock of fish and does produce the occasional surprise.

If you need further information about fishing in Cardiff this site is highly informative. www.glamorgananglersclub.org.uk

During May Environment Agency Fisheries Enforcement Officers have continued patrolling the river banks and responding to reports of out of season fishing. Two officers in Northumbria dealt with 26 close season and 11 licence offences in one day alone. Patrols across England also detected other offences, such as unlicensed fishing, unauthorised crayfish traps and prohibited baits.

Angling Trust angling newsIn the Southeast Region, Angling Trust volunteers are working in partnership with the Environment Agency on Operation CLAMP DOWN to identify hotspots where illegal fishing is regularly taking place. As the weather has warmed up, volunteers have provided intelligence on a number of locations where illegal fishing is taking place. These areas will be visited by future Environment Agency patrols. Further information on the Voluntary Bailiff Service, including how to sign up in the pilot Southeast Region, can be found on the Angling Trust’s website.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said, “We will maintain these patrols and respond to reports throughout the close season. Anyone tempted to break the rules should think again. They risk a court appearance and a fine of up to £50,000 if convicted. These patrols cover a large area and officers can cover several rivers during a day. A wide range of stillwater fisheries are open now for those that want to wet a line before the rivers open again on 16th June.”

“Anyone witnessing illegal fishing incidents in progress can report it directly to the Environment Agency hotline, 0800 80 70 60. Information on illegal fishing and environmental crime can also be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Fish Legal solicitors have exposed serious failings at the Environment Agency (EA) in responding to water pollution which kills wildlife. For many years Fish Legal members have complained of the Agency failing to respond to fish kill incidents effectively, including not completing full fish kill surveys to assess the numbers of dead fish or the impact on remaining fish populations. Fish Legal can now show from the EA’s own damning data just how bad the situation really is.

Angling Trust angling newsTFish Legal made a freedom of information request regarding the EA’s response over the past 6 years to pollutions which caused fish mortality. This was to find out the number of fish kill assessments done immediately after an incident; whether they responded within 24 hrs (or at all); and whether they surveyed the remaining affected species within 8 weeks after the incident (to assess recovery). The disclosure revealed a shocking lack of both mortality assessments and population surveys, as well as poor response times, and in some cases no fisheries response at all.  Out of the 17 fishery areas in England, the lowlights included:

• Just 134 immediate fish kill assessments completed by fisheries teams in 6 years out of 839 incidents killing fish: that’s just 16% of incidents being followed up with a proper assessment of dead wildlife once pollution occurs;

• Regional variation sees immediate fish kill reports in 61% of cases in Anglian Central, but in 0% of cases in 4 other regions: North and South Wessex, Cornwall and East Midlands.  In South Wessex fishery surveys were carried out within 8 weeks in 43% of cases, but in 6 other regions no cases at all were followed up with a survey of this type;

• Only 40 pollution incidents killing fish were followed up with a survey of the remaining fish population within 8 weeks, out of 839 incidents over 6 years: a mere 5% of total cases!

In England & Wales 1.3 million freshwater anglers contribute about £22 million a year in licence fees to fund the EA’s delivery of its statutory duty to maintain, improve and develop fisheries.  These figures indicate that it is failing in its statutory duty to licence-payers.

Fish Legal has met with and written to the EA’s Head of Fisheries for answers and will be closely scrutinising what changes are brought forward to improve matters.  It is clear that poor decisions are being made by Environment Management teams, who decide not to involve fisheries teams when responding to incidents.

Fish Legal has also discovered that the EA does not always follow its own Operational Instructions for responding to water pollution.  There remains a fundamental concern over the Agency’s ability to gather effectively the evidence needed to make polluters pay for the damage they cause to fisheries, and to assess the state of the water environment.

William Rundle, Head Solicitor at Fish Legal, said: “We have been surprised by what appears in the Agency data and I have met with the Environment Agency Head of Fisheries to discuss these problems.  We have had an open and candid conversation about this and he has promised to look into the situation himself and bring forward improvements.  I understand an audit of “Environment Management” performance has already been set up.  It goes without saying that this situation cannot continue, as it appears that even the minimum standard of service required by the Agency is not being met.”

Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal, said: “Fish kill surveys are important for criminal prosecutions generally but also for Fish Legal when it takes civil legal action against polluters on behalf of its members.  Without a proper survey, the courts do not have all the information they need to impose tough fines, and polluters use this to argue there has been less damage to fisheries when faced with paying compensation to affected angling clubs.  This means that polluters get away without proper punishment and the objective of deterring offenders is not fully achieved.  It is quite frankly ridiculous that the EA does not carry out full surveys after each and every incident which involves fish going ‘belly up’ in our nation’s precious streams, rivers and lakes.”

CC Moore's Active Feast Method Mix review

CC Moore products are created under the ethos "Quality without compromise". Their products are well known and well respected amongst anglers worldwide and their tried and tested baits not only represent outstanding value for money, they also contain high quality ingredients sourced from reputable suppliers who guarantee their purity, freshness and traceability. Uk Fisherman decided to put one of their products to the test ... their Active Feast Method Mix.

Product Description:

Active Feast is one of the most naturally attractive method mixes on the market and is not only irresistible to carp. As the mix breaks apart it releases powerful soluble feeding triggers to all layers of the water stimulating carp into a indulgent feeding frenzy. With fish recognising natural food items on the bottom, in mid water and on the surface, they are pulled down onto the baited area where the remaining feed and hookbait is situated.

Review:

First off I have to say that we spend more time glued to our computers here at UK Fisherman than we do actually fishing ... sad but true! So when we do venture out from the gloom of the UK Fisherman office we like to be armed with baits that will definitely give us the edge. CC Moore's Active Feast Method Mix certainly gave us that.

Even before I tore open the bag in excitement you can see that this is a quality product, packed with quality ingredients including a large percentage of freeze dried insects and bugs (including water flies, snails, shrimps, daphnia, insect eggs and other 'naturals'). Once opened, the smell also tells you that this is a quality, fish attracting product. The mix even comes in a resealable bag which is a plus in itself.

As for the mixing to the required consistency, it was simple and effortless to create a mix to suit your exact needs whether your using an open-ended feeder, cage feeder, method feeder or stick. Their claim that "as the mix breaks apart it releases powerful soluble feeding triggers to all layers of the water" is certainly true. We tested it in a bucket and could see that whilst some particles remainned suspended in the water, others fell to the bottom, creating fish attractors at all levels.

To conclude, we found the the Active Feast Method Mix from CC Moore an excellent product, easy to use and at a reasonable price. The following reviewers seemed to agree:

Active Feast is simply one of those products that I no longer leave home without. Its naturally outstanding make - up just oozes confidence as soon as t he seal on the bag is opened. T he combined natural food items found within the mix enable you to present a lingering haze of attraction around your choice of hookbait.
Ollie Pearce

It really is something special and something that will be a major edge in my fishing and possibly yours too.
Spencer Wright
